Johnny was a vital part of the musical landscape in Durham Region, dedicating his life to music. His versatility was evident in his involvement with bands like Toronto produced by Arnold Lannie, Cindy and The Slammers, and the Highland Creek Pipe Band, celebrating his Scottish heritage.
He was a mentor and supporter of musicians of all ages, encouraging originality and passion. Music, his true love, was the connection which he shared with all the other loves of his life, from participating in and hosting "jam nights, “to belting “Don’t Dream It’s Over” at the kitchen table with friends. His dedication to his family and friends shines through their collective desire to commemorate and celebrate his life.
Johnny will always be remembered for his kindness, humility, and ever-present smile, which created deep connections with everyone he met. The John Dawson Music Fund continues his legacy by nurturing the spirit and enthusiasm of those pursuing their passion of music.
"He was a great musician but an even better human being."
The John Dawson Music Fund at Durham Community Foundation is dedicated to nurturing and fostering the musical talents of children aged 8 to 18 residing within Durham Region. The fund which is administered by the Foundation, will provide crucial support for young musicians by enabling them to either purchase an instrument or receive music lessons, a luxury that their families might otherwise be unable to afford. Whether a child is just beginning their musical journey or looking to deepen their existing skills, the John Dawson Music Fund strives to ensure that financial limitations do not hinder their artistic growth and passion for music.
To benefit from the John Dawson Music Fund, children must reside and attend school in Durham Region. The application process is collaborative, requiring the involvement of the child, and their parent(s), along with their music/school teacher. Together, they fill out the application to highlight the child's interest and commitment to music. By encouraging this joint effort, the fund not only supports individual musical development but also fosters a supportive community around the young musician, helping to build a robust foundation for their future endeavors in music.
